In the gray daylight, a faint shadow crossed Emily. She was alive and breathing, staring up at a tall man who was waiting and watching to make sure she was okay. Emily carefully brushed away the sand from her chin, wincing at the briny sting. She felt a little sick to her stomach too. Straightening, the pain in her lower back was far worse. It was where she’d been struck, the club hitting a bone in her spine. Wiggle your toes. She did, and slowly closed her eyes, relieved. When she opened them, he was there, standing near the tall man. He was staring too. The sight of him striking fear almost as painful as the club’s strike had.

Harold sneered wickedly at her, a part of his face hidden when he stepped behind the other man. He poked his head around again, that terrible smile curling. It left her thinking that he enjoyed watching her in pain. Next to her, Richard was nursing injuries. A knot on the back of his head from the fat end of a club and a jagged cut above his eye. She nudged an elbow against his thigh, getting his attention. When he saw her staring, shame and embarrassment instantly filled his face.

He was blaming himself. But this wasn’t his fault. Nobody won against the Outsiders. She decided to tell him so the first chance she had. His hands shook when he poured water onto a torn cloth, offering to clean her face. Reaching, Emily steadied the tremble, guiding, while he wiped the blood and dirt from her face.

“Thank you,” she managed to say, taking the cloth from his hands, using the moment to clutch his hand. “And thank you for trying to stop them too.”

He rocked his head, half nodding, somewhat agreeing, and her heart ached for the self-reproach he was putting himself through. A laugh. Richard glared at Harold, shifting to get up, threatening to finish what was started.

“Now, now,” the tall man said, intervening. “I’m sorry my scouts attacked. That was never the intention.” He had a long face, and equally long hair that reached his shoulders. It was brown and poker straight and moved gently like the ocean swells as the man turned to face them. “And I promise you, a punishment will be delivered. Swift and firm.”

“Better make it so,” Richard warned, and backed away to continue helping Emily. She flinched at the sound of cloth tearing as he fashioned a bandage from his coveralls.

“Just exactly who is us?” Emily asked, revolted at the sight of Harold’s face, at the idea of what he was going to do. She winced again, the swell on her lip throbbing. “Who are you?”

How far had Harold fallen? He killed Sammi and then joined the Outsiders, raping and pillaging anyone who had made the unfortunate mistake of crossing their paths.

The attack was still hazy, but it was the tall man who’d come to her rescue. That wasn’t at all like the Outsiders she knew of.
